Interdisciplinary Workshop
Interdisciplinary Innovation workshop, integrating the 4 cultures domain
14-18 JUNE 2021
The “Interdisciplinary Workshop” tool place at i3S, in Porto, Portugal and it joined staff from the different Hybrid Lab members.
This workshop’s aim was to promote an intellectually stimulating environment to exchange ideas and forge new collaborations. Its main aim was to integrate the 4 cultures, Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, and Humanities, in didactic and multidisciplinary teaching and learning strategies.
This was a multidisciplinary STEAM approach to conceptualize, apply and test novel teaching/ learning strategies.
The workshop used a multi-disciplinary approach to the topic of art & science. Theoretical knowledge and hands-on experiments were used to address connections between the technological and biological realms and artistic methods and implementations.
3 sessions:
a) participants were trained in creative thinking applied to Biohacking, Biotechnology and Humanities. The aim of this session was to catalyse innovation in science with design thinking approaches;
b) the audience experienced the topic – Humanities on Ethics of biohacking/ biotechnology/ bioengineering and innovation, training in Biothinking;
c) biohacking to outreach that focused on bioart, bio-design, creative processes and co-creation while reflecting on the impact of the applied technologies on society and ecology;
During the workshop participants:
a) used hands-on knowledge, microbiology techniques, gene editing, and biohacking;
b) infused design thinking and arts and design concepts and methodologies into the way they conduct their scientific research, and used ‘design and visual literacy’ to promote creativity and innovative thinking in their constructs;
c) acquired a higher level of transferable skills;
d) reflected on Ethics of biohacking/ biotechnology/ bioengineering and innovation;
d) explored how the interconnectivity between biotechnology, artists, scientists, and engineers can allow them to create art and technology in both a reflective and constructive manner;
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event happened online.
Those involved in education, science and arts research and communication, that were staff of HYBRID Lab Network institutions or partner institutions, were invited to participate in this activity and project.
