Waag presented the Creative CRISPR Course on the 12th of May 2022.
Creative CRISPR is an educational toolkit for those who are interested in creating a creative biotechnology course themselves. It is ideal for people who want to learn about DIY labs, growing their own materials and using genetic engineering techniques but who do not know where to start because they don’t have the necessary background.
This open-source course could help you kickstart or improve your own biotechnology course for artists or enthusiasts in non-formal education.

The Creative CRISPR Course is an educational course for artists and the general public who are interested in genetic engineering and want to explore CRISPR-Cas9 technologies in a creative context. No prior knowledge about biology or experience in the lab is needed to participate. This pilot course was developed during Hybrid Lab Network activities, and it was tested with students, teachers, and people from different countries and backgrounds.
This course is the result of a two-year collaboration between universities and Life Sciences research labs across Europe on how to develop creative experiments using genetic engineering, including CRISPR-Cas9. The course aims to open up genetic engineering to artists, designers, and the public at large.

The event included an international video call with the Hybrid Project partners, and the online streaming of the presentations 16:00 and 18:00 hrs. The event ended with an exhibition of works produced by students during the course and tour of Waag’s Textile Lab.
