TOOLBOX

The Toolbox is born out of Hybrid Lab Network’s explorations into interdisciplinary teaching and learning and is a key Intellectual Output (IO2) of the project.

From multidisciplinary learning and teaching, activities emerged a series of documents, ideas and resources that teachers and educators can use to assemble and promote their own cross-disciplinary courses and learning environments on, in and into Higher Education STEAM.

It offers teachers new ways to promote collaboration when designing new solutions for STEAM learning, both in the classroom and community.

These tools were co-design by teachers, artists and researchers from the sciences and humanities to promote critical thinking, problem solving, proficiency in digital and transversal skills and autonomy. The Toolbox tries to encompass the main stages in the learning process: research, discussion, experimentation and creation.

This unfinished collection of instruments is in itself an experimental set-up. We intend that the use of these instruments by the community will help us evaluate, review, refine and expand these resources. The toolbox will grow and evolve with the project development and your feedback.

TOOLS

Promoting dialogue & creativity

Particularly in an interdisciplinary setting it is fundamental to bridge the mental gap between frameworks of thought, fields of knowledge and points of view. These tools will help you promote dialogue, out-of-the-box thinking and creative explorations.

Lab work / experimental setup

Introducing people from different backgrounds to the experimental process, laboratory practices and exploratory techniques might be a challenging but powerful education tool. These knowledges and techniques will allow non-scientists to enlarge their field of action giving them new avenues to explore and create. Meanwhile scientists will be confronted with the necessity to communicate their field and rethink their practices.

Online tools

We suggest a series of preexisting online tools and some potential uses and applications in an educational environment. These tools vary from websites, online platforms and videos to proposals on the organization of online learning and teaching activities.

Presentations, Interviews & supporting texts

Specialists from different fields, artists, scientists, writers and philosophers introduce key concepts from their fields, present their work, challenge our views and introduce new interdisciplinary projects and questions, either in video presentations, interviews or texts.

Reading list / References list

Here you can find an extensive interdisciplinary reference list that includes books and articles on several topics to support different course structures and challenges. The list also includes suggestions of artists, artistic projects and other sources of information that can be useful to promote our and your students' exploration of several cross-disciplinary subjects.

Hybrid projects

An important part of the learning process is experimentation and creation, learn by doing. With that in mind we propose a series of project challenges to develop in an educational setting and share some examples on interdisciplinary projects.
